INFORMATION ABOUT THE CAUSE:
All proceeds will go to working on issues of gendered violence (Rape and sexual abuse used as a war weapon against girls and women & male land mine victims that have lost limbs as a result of forced military labor and child soldiers) in the Mae La Refugee camp on the Thai/Burma border. The Mae La camp is home to 80,000 refugees that have fled Burma's ethnogenocidal war--one of the longest civil wars in the world without a cease fire.
San Diego is home to hundreds of refugee families from Burma. This project will also work to connect documentation of abuses of gendered violence from those families and the families within the camp to be compiled into a report that will be submitted to Amnesty, International. This will serve as documentation to hold the state of Burma accountable for its human rights abuses on an international level.
In addition, if enough money is raised the creation of a new community project will also be funded through this benefit. The people living within Mae La camp will get to decide what type of project they desire the most within the camp.
DONATIONS: If you or someone you know would like to make a donation to the cause, please send an email to jen.cordaro@gmail.com or post on the event wall and someone will contact you. We are looking for donated items for the silent auction and raffle as well as cash donations. All donations are tax-deductible and appropriate donation letters with tax information will be provided.
