Vista Chamber of Commerce Opposes Measure G on November Ballot

Vista, CA — September 24, 2024 — The Vista Chamber of Commerce is announcing its opposition to Measure G, the regional transportation initiative on the November 2024 ballot, citing concerns over increased taxation, economic burden, and potential inequities in how the funds will be used.

Impact on Local Businesses and Residents
While the intent of Measure G is to improve San Diego County’s transportation infrastructure, the Vista Chamber believes it places an undue financial strain on businesses and residents, particularly those already struggling with the rising cost of living. The proposed half-cent sales tax, which would continue in perpetuity, will increase the financial burden on small businesses and families in our community, further elevating the cost of goods and services. This comes at a time when many are still recovering from the economic challenges of the last few years.

Insufficient Benefits for Vista and North County
The Vista Chamber is also concerned that North County communities, including Vista, may see limited benefits from the measure. Historically, infrastructure projects in measures like this one have been focused on urban centers, potentially leaving smaller and rural areas underserved. The Chamber questions whether Vista will receive its fair share of the promised improvements, such as road repairs and transit options, especially given the measure’s focus on expanding public transit systems which may not adequately address the unique transportation needs of suburban and rural communities.

Taxation Without Clear Accountability
While Measure G promises accountability through citizen oversight committees, the Vista Chamber is not convinced that these measures will be sufficient to ensure funds are used effectively and equitably across the entire region. Previous measures with similar oversight promises have resulted in funds being concentrated in areas that do not reflect the needs of all communities, particularly those like Vista that are more car-dependent and less connected to regional transit hubs.

Economic Impact
The Chamber is also concerned about the long-term economic impact of another tax on local businesses. At a time when many small businesses are grappling with high inflation, supply chain challenges, and a tight labor market, an additional tax will further squeeze their bottom lines, potentially leading to layoffs or closures. Vista’s local economy thrives on its small business community, and Measure G could hamper their recovery and growth. The Measure G sales tax, if passed, will not expire.

A Call for More Balanced Solutions
The Vista Chamber of Commerce supports efforts to improve transportation infrastructure, but Measure G is not the right solution for our community. We call for more balanced, equitable approaches that do not rely on sales taxes and that more fairly distribute resources to suburban and rural areas. Any future transportation initiatives must take into account the diverse needs of all San Diego County residents, not just those in urban areas.
